Dr. Nutcase
During the final leg of my internship, I was given the opportunity to texture a minor character in Toy Story 5 named Dr. Nutcase. He appears briefly in a scene where Jessie calls Woody while he is in the middle of rescuing another lost toy. Dr. Nutcase is the lost toy in this scene, appearing stuck in a tree and visibly distressed.
Shading a character was a valuable learning experience because, while the process shares many of the same tools and principles as prop shading, the workflow within Pixar’s pipeline differs in several ways. I primarily used Mari to texture Dr. Nutcase before exporting the textures and reincorporating them into Pixar’s proprietary texturing tools. This experience helped me better understand the character shading workflow and expand my skills beyond the prop assets I had previously worked on.
